The Ultimate Guide to Organize + Stylize Your Dorm Room

Now that the littles are back in school, it’s time to prep for sending your older ones off to college!  Whether this is their first year leaving the nest, or they’re returning for yet another fun year on campus, these tried + true tips are sure to help get them started off on the right foot!

With Maria as a professional organizer, and myself as a recent college grad, we have put our heads together to compile what we deem the ultimate guide to organize + stylize your dorm room.  Here are a few tips from the pros:

CLOSET

Amazon Closet Extender image

This is helpful for hanging clothes and maximizing vertical space.

Container Store Hanging Sweater Organizer

This is great to use next to the Closet Extender for jeans, sweatshirts and other bulky items.

Amazon Slim Hangers

You know how much Maria LOVES these, and how much space they really do save!

Container Store Shoe Organizer

This unit is great because it can accommodate high-top sneakers, heels, etc. which many of the other shoe organizers fail to do, and it can be stored vertically or horizontally.  If it fits in the closet, it would have to be horizontal since clothing will hang down low.  If there is space elsewhere in the room, you can stack two of them and use the top of it as an additional storage space - it’s also great for storing papers, books, purses, etc., if you don’t fill it with shoes.

Elfa System

If your closet has standard doors, this system would provide a TON of extra space. This could be a spot to roll leggings, workout tanks, hang bras, store undies/socks, etc. If you order this option, I would suggest one additional large basket. The great thing about these is they can be used with any standard door, so a piece that can be used for many years to come. This could also work on the inside of the door to the room, allowing space to store plates, silverware, snacks, etc.

BED

Container Store Under Bed Drawers

A personal favorite of mine!  They are great to stack and provide additional hiding space for less frequently used items.

Container Store Bed Risers

I recommend raising your bed as high as you can (or are comfortable with) so you can utilize as much space as possible underneath for drawers, bins, your yoga mat, etc.

Container Store Bedside Storage Caddy

Sizes vary and allow you space to keep the essentials within reach.

OTHER ESSENTIALS

Command Products

The KEY to utilizing as much wall space as possible since they don’t damage walls. These would also work well on the side of the desk to hold office supplies or jewelry.  They can be useful in hanging a mirror too (if your room does not have one already), but just be sure to check the weight limit on your hooks prior to hanging!

Container Store 3-Tier Cart

Super versatile and could be used for “kitchen” items or toiletries/makeup/etc.

Container Store Style Station Pro

This pairs perfectly with the 3-Tier Cart when using for toiletries!

West Elm 3-Pocket Magnet Storage Caddy

Fabulous for using on the side of the fridge!

Amazon Desktop Organizer

This can be arranged in multiple ways to help maximize vertical space on your desk.  Truly a game changer!

Container Store Rolling Hamper with Wheels

While this is convenient to roll to and from the laundry room, it also saves you space since you don’t need a laundry basket with it.
